The Proprietor Robin Barwell |
|
|
Robin Barwell was born and raised in Worcestershire and has
enjoyed a varied career.
Educated at Shrewsbury (failed everything but coxed
the school eight!) and Millfield (passed everything and had a marvellous
time) and then in 1966 joined a leading racehorse trainer as a pupil.
He was been associated with the stable of Grand National Winner
Highland Wedding in 1969. He has also worked for trainers Richmond
Sturdy and Ian Balding before a spell with The Jockey Club as "legman"
for General Sir Randle Fielden, the then Senior Steward.
At that time, and whilst living in London, he moonlighted as a minicab
driver with Ambassador and met John Griffin and Lenny Foste. With
them he created the now highly successful London cab and courier
company Addison Lee.
Robin stayed with them as senior controller until 1982
when asked to rejoin Toby Balding as assistant trainer during the time
of Beech Road (Champion Hurdle) Green Ruby (Ayr and Stewards Cup) and
Little Polveir (Grand National) .
In 1989 he moved to Devon and the following year was granted his
first trainers licence. During a thirteen year career he trained
63 winners under all codes. Alas in 2003 economic reality kicked
in, Barwell decided to have a career change and bought the Swan
Hotel, Bampton. |
